TORRANCE
Status: Design complete
Materials: Brick, river rock gravel and concrete pavers
Flora: California natives, citrus trees and other fruit trees, berries, seasonal veggies, wildflowers
In this young family's backyard transformation, we focused on creating an edible landscape that balances productivity with livability. We installed raised beds for rotating seasonal vegetables and established a dedicated blackberry patch in a raised bed. The family's passion for homegrown food inspired us to add dwarf fruit trees along the back fence, offering fresh harvests within easy reach. We preserved a portion of the existing lawn for their family to play while adding a spacious dining patio shaded by a fruitless Olive tree at the rear of the property. Along the side of the house, we built a pergola draped with passion fruit vines to provide dappled shade over a comfortable lounge area, creating the perfect spot for morning coffee or evening relaxation. We added California natives and wildflowers throughout the landscape to ensure that local pollinators would visit and find nourishment.
