OAK GROVE HABITAT RESTORATION

Status: Design complete

Materials: Boulders, river rock gravel, untreated railroad ties, hog wire fence with coyote rollers

Flora: California natives that thrive in Oak woodlands

In this La Cañada oak woodland, we designed a gradual staircase and observation deck that winds through the existing oaks without disturbing their roots. We removed non-native species including Yucca, Crepe Myrtle, and Fan Palms, replacing them with southern California natives suited to dry woodlands. A swale now captures and directs stormwater runoff during heavy rains. We positioned boulders throughout the space to serve dual purposes: creating natural seating for the homeowners while providing shelter for local wildlife including coyotes, black bears, squirrels, raccoons, and skunks.
